When you experience an injury or condition affecting your hand, wrist, elbow, or shoulder, it can impact your daily life in many ways. Tasks like typing, cooking, or even holding a pen may become difficult. That’s where rehab for hand conditions comes in. It is designed to support your recovery and help you regain function and confidence in your upper limb.

We understand how important it is to get the right care tailored to your needs. Whether you have a fracture, tendon injury, arthritis, or are recovering from surgery, rehab can be a valuable part of your journey. In this post, we’ll explore what rehab for hand conditions involves, the benefits it may offer, and some practical exercises you can try when appropriate.

What Does Rehab for Upper Limb Conditions Involve?

Rehab for hand conditions is a specialised approach that focuses on restoring movement, strength, and coordination in the upper limb. It often includes a combination of therapies such as:

  • Manual therapy: Techniques to improve joint mobility and reduce stiffness.

  • Exercise programs: Tailored movements to build strength and flexibility.

  • Splinting or bracing: Support to protect injured areas and promote healing.

  • Education: Guidance on how to manage your condition and avoid further injury.

Each rehab plan is personalised. We work closely with you to understand your goals and challenges. This helps us create a program that fits your lifestyle and supports your recovery.

How Rehab for Hand Conditions May Help You

Rehab can play a key role in managing symptoms and improving function. While we never promise specific outcomes, rehab may help by:

  • Improving range of motion: Gentle exercises can encourage joints to move more freely.

  • Increasing strength: Targeted activities can build muscle around the injured area.

  • Enhancing coordination: Fine motor skills can be retrained to improve hand use.

  • Reducing stiffness: Manual therapy and movement can ease tightness.

  • Supporting healing: Splints and braces can protect your hand during recovery.

By addressing these areas, rehab aims to support your ability to perform everyday tasks and return to activities you enjoy. It is important to follow the guidance of your therapist and communicate any concerns during your sessions.

What Are Some Good Rehabilitation Exercises for the Hand?

When appropriate, your therapist may recommend exercises to help your hand regain strength and flexibility. Here are some examples that are commonly used:

Finger bends

  1. Gently bend each finger towards your palm and then straighten it.

  2. Repeat 10 times for each finger.

    Thumb opposition

  3. Touch the tip of your thumb to the tip of each finger one at a time.

  4. This helps improve thumb mobility.

    Wrist stretches

  5. Extend your arm with the palm facing down. Use your other hand to gently press the fingers down and back towards your forearm.

  6. Hold for 15-30 seconds and repeat 3 times.

    Grip strengthening

  7. Squeeze a soft ball or therapy putty for a few seconds and release.

  8. Repeat 10-15 times.

    Finger lifts

  9. Place your hand flat on a table. Lift each finger slowly off the surface and lower it back down.

  10. Repeat 10 times per finger.

Always perform exercises within a comfortable range and stop if you experience pain. Your therapist will guide you on the right frequency and intensity based on your condition.
